The idea of consulting has always been harbored an interesting dilemma in my mind. When a client hires a consultant he or she is almost always expecting something out of the transaction and it is assumed that any consultant that is hired knows a thing or two about what he is consulting about. Like any other business transaction, the art of consulting is also a transaction; the primary asset exchanged being knowledge.
In our perspective industrious fields we are eager to become as knowledgeable as we can about the product or service we strive to offer the world. As business people we wish to become as efficient as we can with the time we allot to our work. Otherwise we will likely not survive any length of time in the economic playing field. This eagerness, however, creates a matrix of thought within the experience of our minds that at the same time provide us the grounds of execution that may enhance our business competencies, but may also create in us a fragmented sense of being in which we find that having put all our attention in one idea, our attention, and so our energy, has been removed from other, even unseen, aspects of our lives.
As entrepreneurs and business people we know what detriments a fragmented mind can create in both our personal and business lives. Nevertheless, the experience of fragmentation is a calling to better understand a context of ourselves we have been unaware of. Naturally, we begin to question what it is that we are really doing with our energy. We ask to what end does all our busyness serve? Do we really know what we want to accomplish in our business endeavors and are my actions in accord with what I know? Or are we resisting integration of a transformation in our business and personal lives for the fear that we may have to sacrifice to But how are these knowledge assets produced in the first place? What is the wider context
Knowledge is thought of as an asset and when we are speaking about consulting we are talking in terms of giving advice—of offering knowledge. but any advice received or given automatically excludes anything that it cannot evoke in the minds of both parties. It is commonly understood that the experts in any particular field are likely to make the best consulting agents. However it is not so known that an expert in anything, even the master craftsman, or entrepreneur, is as liable to forgo his attention on other aspects of his unconscious life as any beginner pursuing any craft.
Any business person is aware or, or should be, about the basic implications of opportunity cost.
